The probe into the death of a Taiwanese influencer linked to controversial rapper Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, has been reclassified as a murder investigation.
In a statement today, Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus announced the reclassification from a sudden death probe, adding that investigations are ongoing under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
While the statement did not name the victim involved in the case, the matter is understood to be linked to the foreign influencer, Hsieh Yu-hsin.
Hsieh was found dead at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur last month.
According to media reports, Wee had met up with Hsieh at the hotel to discuss a collaboration.
A police statement placed the day of the meeting on Oct 22.
Found dead in bathtub
Sin Chew Daily reported that during the meeting, Hsieh, who was also known online as Iris Hsieh or “Nurse Goddess”, had gone to take a shower but did not come out.
Wee is said to have later found her dead in the hotel room’s bathtub, before calling the emergency hotline at 12.30pm.
After going down to the hotel lobby, where police happened to be stationed, Wee was then escorted back to his room by the officers, who conducted a search in the room.

Nine pills, suspected to be ecstasy, were found in the room, leading to Wee being brought to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, where he was subjected to a urine test.
The test determined that he was positive for amphetamines, meth, ketamine, and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
The rapper was remanded for two days and subsequently charged with drug possession and use on Oct 24.
Wee claimed trial to the charges and is scheduled to appear in court again on Dec 18.
Hsieh’s manager has since reportedly challenged Wee to clarify matters surrounding the influencer’s death, insisting that he had never seen her engage in drug use before.
Initially, Taiwanese media quoted her manager as saying she had died of a heart attack. - Mkini
