Students no longer required to wear neckties next year - Education Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry (MoE) said that students will not be required to wear neckties to school starting next year.

The announcement was outlined in a circular dated Dec 17.

The decision followed MoE's 2025 Special Professional Meeting held on Dec 8.

The circular was signed by the Director-General of Education Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad.

However, the ministry said wearing a necktie is still allowed if agreed upon by the school and parents.

In this regard, the MOE stressed that no party is permitted to coerce or pressure students regarding the wearing of neckties.

"The MoE is always mindful of parents' need to prepare their children's school necessities before the start of the new school session," it said.

The policy took into account student needs such as the local hot and humid climate that can make wearing neckties daily uncomfortable, the circular added.

The decision was also made to address household financial burdens, the document, uploaded on the MOE website, added. - NST
