Zahid to table proposal to increase Bantuan Wang Ihsan amid rising costs

KUANTAN: A proposal to raise the Bantuan Wang Ihsan flood aid beyond the current RM1,000 per household will be submitted to the cabinet for consideration.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, acknowledging the rising cost of living, said he would table the matter at the next cabinet meeting for approval.

"The flood aid was previously increased from RM500 per household to RM1,000. I also recognise that the cost of living has risen, so I will present the proposal during the cabinet meeting. I will personally put it forward, with the Education Minister as a witness," he told reporters after visiting flood victims at the SMK Paya Besar temporary relief centre today.

Also present were Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

When asked about the potential new flood aid amount, Zahid said it would depend on the government's financial capacity.

The flood aid, initially RM500 per household for families affected by floods, was increased to RM1,000 in 2021.

Meanwhile, Zahid said that heads of households who received the RM1,000 aid during the first wave would only be eligible to claim again after three months if subsequent waves of flooding forced them to evacuate to temporary relief centres. - NST
