Muhyiddin downplays Gerakan, MIPP attending Hamzah’s iftar

The Bersatu president says it does not indicate that Hamzah Zainudin has Gerakan and MIPP's support.

PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has downplayed the attendance of Gerakan and Malaysian Indian People’s Party’s leaders at an iftar organised by his former deputy, Hamzah Zainudin.

Muhyiddin dismissed the notion that it reflected Hamzah having Gerakan and MIPP’s support, saying leaders of the two Perikatan Nasional components had the right to attend the event if invited by Hamzah.

“I do not know (why they attended the event), I heard about it, but it’s their right if they were invited. Perhaps it was meant to be a friendly gathering with the opposition leader. To me, there’s nothing wrong with that.

“It doesn’t mean that their support has shifted. Because he (Hamzah) isn’t really the opposition leader anymore. He should stop using the title,” he said, according to MalaysiaGazette.

Asked about the March 14 PN Supreme Council meeting to decide on the new opposition leader, Muhyiddin confirmed that he would be attending the meeting.

Hamzah held a breaking of fast event last night which was attended by Gerakan president Dominic Lau and MIPP president P Punithan, among others.

Also spotted were MIC president SA Vigneswaran, Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir and recently-suspended Bersatu vice-president Ronald Kiandee.

During a speech at the iftar, Hamzah said that “many parties” supported him, pointing to the leaders in attendance.

Hamzah was expelled from Bersatu on Feb 13 at the height of a leadership rift with Muhyiddin, but remains opposition leader as the bloc had not named a new leader.

Bersatu leaders have accused PAS – which recently assumed the PN chairmanship following the appointment of its vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar – of dragging its feet in appointing a new opposition leader. - FMT
