JKR street lights to stay lit for two hours longer during haze

The public works department will adjust the street light timer systems, as the haze will cause reduced visibility and increase the risk of accidents.

PONTIAN:
Street lights under the jurisdiction of the public works department (JKR) will stay lit for up to two hours longer during haze conditions to help improve visibility for road users, deputy works minister Ahmad Maslan said.

He said JKR would adjust the timer systems that controlled street lighting, as haze conditions cause reduced visibility and increased the risk of accidents.

Ahmad said street lights typically turned on from 7pm to 7am. “Each street light has a timer setting that can be adjusted. During haze conditions, the operating hours can be extended by up to two hours,” he said.

Local councils would be encouraged to take similar measures, he told reporters after visiting the family of three siblings aged 8 to 18 who died when their motorcycle collided with a lorry on Thursday amid hazy weather and limited visibility.

Ahmad urged road users to exercise greater caution and ensure safe visibility when driving in hazy conditions. - FMT
