PKR POLLS | The conclusion of the PKR election will likely see deputy presidential candidate Azmin Ali’s team winning handsomely, although it remains possible for fellow contender Rafizi Ramli’s team to seize the party’s Youth wing.
Sources from both camps suggest that their informal tallies put Dr Afif Bahardin and Akmal Nasir neck-and-neck in the race for the wing's top post.
Afif is known as a Azmin loyalist, while Akmal is widely regarded as Rafizi’s protégé and chief lieutenant.
Malaysiakini is currently unable to determine which team has won the most number of seats on the PKR Youth wing committee.
In 2014, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who is not aligned to Azmin, was elected the PKR Youth wing leader, but his committee members were mostly staunch Azmin backers.
Should Akmal be elected PKR Youth chief, he can still co-opt those from his team into the wing’s committee.
What is certain, however, is that Azmin’s aide Hilman Idham will be the next PKR Youth wing deputy head because the gap between him and the nearest challenger, Raymond Ahuar of Rafizi’s team, is insurmountable.
Meanwhile, Haniza Talha (photo) and Dr Daroyah Alwi appear set to win the top two positions in the PKR Women’s wing with clear margins over their challengers. Both are aligned with Azmin.
As for the party’s central leadership council (MPP) election, the results will likely see most of the 20 seats go to those aligned with Azmin.
According to Malaysiakini’s tally, there are five MPP candidates aligned with Rafizi who are likely to make the cut - Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, Larry Sng, Nik Nazmi, Nurin Aina and Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
It is not certain when the JPP will finalise the results and make an announcement.
The annual delegates congress for PKR’s Women and Youth wing will begin tonight, with their new lineup expected to be unveiled then. -Mkini
