Big 'serban', long beards but silent on 1MDB – Anwar

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim trained his guns on scholars and civil servants who remained silent over the 1MDB scandal.

Terming it as a “major heist”, he said the greed of certain political leaders is not the sole factor behind such an alleged crime and the destruction of the system.

“But also because the community of scholars kept their mouths shut and were willing to be an accessory in the name of race and religion.

"(Their) 'serban' become bigger, their beards longer. They may have a long list of qualifications, but not conscience and ethics,” he added during a lecture at Universiti Malaya today.

The serban is a headgear often worn by Muslim scholars.

Apart from remaining tightlipped on the 1MDB issue, Anwar said there were also scholars and civil servants who conspired to defend what had transpired.

Therefore, the PKR president stressed that it was important for education institutions to produce graduates with impeccable moral values and ethics.

He said in the absence of values and ethics, it would be pointless to have enormous universities equipped with all sorts of facilities. - Mkini
