Dr M: Do the right thing even if it means punishment or cold storage

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today reiterated that civil servants should do the right thing even if it will displease their political masters and cause them to be punished and put into cold storage.
"It's worthwhile to say 'no'. It's better to be correct even if you are punished, being put into cold storage or being ignored," he told administrative and diplomatic services (PTD) officers at a meeting in Petaling Jaya tonight.
The advice has been part of Mahathir's mantra when meeting with civil servants.
He had previously complained about civil servants abetting politicians in wrongdoings under the last government.
Mahathir acknowledged that the duty of the civil servants is to obey the government of the day.
"But if the current government does something wrong, it is the duty of PTD officers to advise the government or the very least, not follow such instructions," he said.
Mahathir stressed that PTD officers must be brave to say no if they are told to "steal".
He warned that they would be culpable and face the consequences if the government they abetted in wrongdoing fell.
"If you do it (wrongdoing), you never know when the government will change.
"When the government change, they have to pay a high price," he said. -Mkini
