MAHATHIR’S 3RD NATIONAL CAR GAINS TRACTION WITH MALAYS & INDIANS – BUT NOT THE CHINESE: 38% OF MALAYSIANS IN SUPPORT, 25% OPPOSE WHILE REMAINING 37% UNSURE – SURVEY

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians are divided on the prospect of a third national car project according to a market research agency, a proposal which the prime minister recently said was not his but “plagiarised” from people.
According to YouGov, almost four in 10 or 38% of Malaysians support the initiative, while one in four (25%) oppose the project. The remaining 37% are unsure.
YouGov’s data, which was based on feedback from 1,012 respondents, also revealed that low-income earners were more likely to support the third national car project compared to higher income earners.
About 46% of those earning RM1,999 or less supported the project, while only 29% earning RM10,000 or more were in favour of the plan.
“While there might not be overwhelming support for a third national car project, our data suggests this could be due to the overall satisfaction and success of the two existing ones,” said Jake Gammon, head of YouGov Omnibus Apac.
Several months ago, Putrajaya said it would launch the third national car project by 2020, with Dr Mahathir Mohamad saying it would be implemented by the private sector.
He had expressed his ambition to start a new national car project in June, saying Proton, which he founded in 1983, was no longer a national car.
In an interview with The Straits Times published yesterday, Mahathir said his administration had to “listen to everybody who has ideas” and even “plagiarised” proposals in the recent national budget, including the one to produce a new national car.
YouGov’s research also revealed that both Perodua and Proton enjoy high levels of public recognition.
Perodua is the most well-known, with 87% of Malaysians being aware of the brand, closely followed by Proton at 86%. Privately-owned Naza is the third most well-known (61%), followed by Inokom (36%), Bufori (8%) and TD2000 (8%).
