PKR reps defend party as a reformist after Ambiga's warning

Two PKR leaders have defended their party after former Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan warned that PKR would soon lose its moral high ground to call itself a reformist party.
PKR Hang Tuah Jaya MP Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said Ambiga’s criticism would not affect the party’s morale in continuing to uphold the Reformasi agenda.
“We respect her views as a leader close to the Bersih movement.
“I don’t think it would weaken our spirits to continue to champion reform,” Shamsul said yesterday.
As for PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil, he said it is unfair to pass judgment from just one point of view.
“It is not just Julau, but several other divisions have also experienced a drastic increase in membership after the general election. So this had actually happened in other divisions too…
“I respect Ambiga’s views, but the issue is larger than that and we are working to improve the electoral process… I feel it is not fair to pass judgment from just one point of view,” Fahmi said.
The Lembah Pantai MP added that Ambiga’s comment is a reminder to PKR that the people are always watching.
“I will contact Ambiga and explain this issue because she is a veteran – not in the party, but in the joint effort to fix the country,” he added.
Shamsul and Fahmi were responding to Ambiga’s tweet on Monday, in which she said that PKR needs to at least believe in clean and fair elections to be a reformist.
Referring to PKR’s troubled party elections, Ambiga said PKR should not assume that most Malaysians cannot see what is happening in the party elections election.
"After all, they saw through the shenanigans of the last government and threw them out. Thirteen thousand increase in members in one day? Really?" she added.
Ambiga was referring to reports that 13,000 people were added into the Julau PKR division membership records in June, just before the cut-off date for new members to enjoy voting rights. - Mkini
