Ships must be run, Mahathir says on Equanimity’s move to Langkawi

The US$250 million superyacht Equanimity was moved from Port Klang to Langkawi yesterday.
SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today explained the relocation of luxury yacht Equanimity from Port Klang to Langkawi, saying ships cannot remain anchored all the time as this could lead to problems.
Speaking to reporters after a bilateral meeting with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on the sidelines of the 33rd Asean Summit here, he said these problems included damage from barnacles.
“Ships must be run. You have to sail the ship at least once every few days,” he said.
The superyacht, which is linked to the 1MDB scandal, arrived in Langkawi yesterday.
It is currently docked at the Royal Malaysian Navy Naval Region 3 headquarters (Mawilla 3) jetty in Bukit Malut.
Mahathir added that the court had decided the Equanimity belongs to Malaysia.
“We can put it anywhere, but of course, our main intention is not to keep the ship. We don’t need such a big ship. It is too luxurious for us. We want to sell it. If you can find a buyer, tell us,” he said.
Mahathir, who is Langkawi MP, then quipped that he could visit the Equanimity when he is there.
The US$250 million yacht was seized in Bali in February. It was allegedly bought by businessman Low Taek Jho with money stolen from 1MDB.
Putrajaya took possession of the vessel in August. On Oct 26, the Admiralty Court approved the terms and conditions for the auction of the yacht from Oct 29 to Nov 28. - FMT
