NEGATIVE reactions to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) are due to Muslims’ mindset and not the treaty itself, said Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar.
“Although the ratification is not happening, Muslims should realise what the real problem is. The problem is not ICERD, the problem is mindset,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
He called on Muslims to address problems concerning the religion that have existed long before Malaysia even mulled ratifying ICERD.
The Pokok Sena MP also blamed the opposition for the negative reactions to ICERD, saying it is trying to reduce Malay-Muslim support for the ruling Pakatan Harapan.
Putrajaya last week announced that it will no longer proceed with plans to ratify ICERD, following outcry from Malay groups.
Despite the climbdown, groups planning a December 8 mega rally originally meant to oppose the ratification of ICERD have said they will go ahead with the demonstration.
