Yoursay: Harapan can’t wash its hands off Indira's case

YOURSAY | 'It must show there is hope for those whose rights were trampled on by BN.'
The Way It Was: The Federal Court decided in favour of M Indira Gandhi in January, nullifying the conversion of all three of her children to Islam. And there is an arrest warrant for her ex-husband Muhammad Riduan Abdullah.
The inspector-general of police and his men know what they have to do. If they can't do the job, they should step aside or opt for early retirement before new competent qualified officers are put in their place.
The previous IGP defied court orders to arrest Riduan, saying that he did not understand the workings of the courts, when his job was to follow orders.
The rule of law is paramount, and we are all subject to and entitled to equal treatment and protection. The ball is in your court IGP, do your job, pronto.
Ravinder: Columnist S Thayaparan hits the nail right on the head. Religion is at the centre of this. The Pakatan Harapan government is giving face to the extremists, which makes a mockery of its vision to unite the people.
Alan Civic: It is not just this case. What about the disappearances of Raymond Koh, Amri Che Mat, Joshua Hilmy and wife Ruth Sitepu? The home minister is sleeping on the job, apparently. Nothing has been done to solve these cases yet.
Fairplayer: If I knew the Harapan government had such weak political will to fight for justice for the helpless rakyat, I would not have supported them on May 9.
Fair Malaysian: Come on, M Kulasegaran (and other Indian Harapan lawmakers). Just because you are a minister now, you cannot give such excuses – saying that it would be improper to interfere with another minister’s portfolio. You are still the people’s representative.
Indian Malaysians dumped MIC because of its failure to stand for Indian rights, and for how Umno diluted the community’s rights using the party. You don't need a crystal ball to know how Indians will react, come the next general election.
To PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, it is heartening to hear that your party has more Indians than MIC. But if this is true, then you too should do something about this. Indians had enough of losing their rights.
Falcon: Now you also know why PAS, Umno and dubious NGO operatives want out of five United Nations treaties, besides the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, on torture, enforced disappearances, migrant worker protection, economic, social and cultural rights, and the Rome Statute.
Fairplayer: I disagree with de facto Law Minister Liew Vui Keong, who says that Putrajaya cannot intervene in locating Indira’s daughter, Prasana Diksa, who was taken away by Riduan.
Harapan must step up and do what the previous administration failed to honour and accomplish – prove that there is hope for those whose rights were ruthlessly trampled on.
Harapan is acting as cruel and heartless as Umno did where Indira's case is concerned. It must prove it is capable of bringing hope and justice to the oppressed and the suppressed. Six months have passed, yet no progress seen in this case. The Home Ministry and the police must show their competence now. No more excuses, please.
As for Liew, if you can’t do your job, maybe it’s best to give your portfolio to someone who at least has a sense of justice and compassion. To all compassionate lawyers out there, like Ambiga Sreenevasan, please help Indira put an end to her suffering and misery. Justice demands it.
RakyatBiasa: Fairplayer, agree with all your comments. The IGP is sleeping. Maybe he should just make way for someone else if he can't do the job.
David Dass: Liew is the de facto law minister. The High Court has ordered custody of Prasana to be given to Indira. The Federal Court has affirmed the decision of the High Court.
So, the police must ensure compliance with the order. The mother may have to go to court citing her former husband for being in contempt, but for Liew to say that he is powerless is absurd.
She had a grievance. She was given a remedy. The authorities must ensure compliance with the order of the court.
Pakcik Am: Liew must know that once the Federal Court makes an order to arrest, the police has to implement it. He must liaise with Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, whose ministry is in charge of the police.
Bornean: Are the law minister and the home minister not on talking terms or what? Just call each other and get to the bottom of things. Is that so difficult? Unless both have no intention to help the poor mother.
Anonymous_1532003508: Liew, are you washing your hands of this case? Are you saying that if a child is abducted from the person with rightful custody, the aggrieved has no recourse but to look for the child in her own? What kind of justice is this?
Roger 5201: Why is Liew playing chicken now? By all means, have a word with the attorney-general and also the home minister to see how the court's decision to grant custody of the child to Indira could be executed. Please also hold those who took matters into their own hand to account for obstruction of justice.
It is unfair to Prasana, and most irresponsible of our de facto law minister to wash his hands in this case, and ask Indira to start the court process all over again!
Lepak: When someone refuses to comply with a court order, it is the government's duty to enforce it and penalise the wrongdoer. What's so difficult to understand about that?
This is an absolutely gutless government. Why should Indira need to start another legal action when they can't even enforce this one? What difference would a new order make? The buck still stops with you.
Newday: Liew, your legalistic reply to this issue is not what is required at this time. The court has ruled in favour of Indira. Your responsibility as a minister is to see that related departments like the police do their job as best as they can to find the child.
Given the religious backdrop of this case, it was obvious that under BN and the police were not particularly diligent in their finding and returning the daughter. Make sure this terrible bias does not happen again, ever. That is your job now, Liew. Close this custody case once and for all.
Merely One: Regardless of the legal issues at play here, this would be an ideal opportunity for the women, family and community development minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail – or more realistically, her deputy minister Hannah Yeoh – to make a stand.
Yeah, I know, wishful thinking.
Kahlil Gibran: So there’s no rule of law, then. - Mkini
