IIUM president's post - Syariah banking expert may replace Maszlee, says source

Former deputy vice-chancellor of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Mohd Daud Bakar may assume the role of the university's president, taking over from Education Minister Maszlee Malik.
The appointment is pending the consent of Pahang ruler Sultan Ahmad Shah, who is the constitutional head of IIUM, a source close to the Education Ministry told Malaysiakini.
“His (Daud’s) name was proposed for the Sultan of Pahang's consent," said the source.
Daud is an expert in Islamic banking and finance.
Beside being an active figure in corporate world, he also chairs the Syariah Advisory Council at Bank Negara Malaysia, the Securities Commission of Malaysia and the Labuan Financial Services Authorities.
Maszlee, who courted flak after being appointed as IIUM president last September, ultimately agreed to step down from the post.
His appointment went against Pakatan Harapan's promise of preventing politicians from sitting on the boards of universities.
The cabinet later said it had made it clear that Maszlee would have to relinquish his post as IIUM president.
Student groups had expressed their dissatisfaction over Maszlee’s IIUM appointment by assembling at the Education Ministry in Putrajaya and were eventually granted an audience with him.  - Mkini
