Sabah Umno to lodge report against Warisan MP for conflict of interest

Sabah Umno communications and strategic director Ghazalie Ansing.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno says it will lodge a police report and a complaint with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against Kalabakan MP Ma’amun Sulaiman for appointing a family member to manage projects in his constituency.
Sabah Umno communications and strategic director Ghazalie Ansing told reporters he was shocked when he heard an audio clip, purportedly of Ma’amun admitting he had appointed his own brother to handle the projects.
“Sabah Umno views this matter seriously as the MP is seen as having a personal agenda to profit from development projects in his area,” he said today.
In the clip, believed to be of Ma’amun speaking at an event last month, he said he had appointed his brother Asdar as he was a contractor.
He also said anybody could apply to carry out projects in Kalabakan, but urged the audience not to get the wrong idea on why he had appointed his brother.
The audio clip was cut off as Ma’amun, who is an MP from Warisan, was explaining what Asdar had been appointed to do.
According to sources, Asdar, a contractor based in Tawau, was appointed as Ma’amun’s special officer after the latter won his seat in the 14th general election.
Ghazalie said Sabah Umno disagreed with Ma’amun’s stand on the matter. As a parliamentarian, he said, Ma’amun should obtain information, advice and solutions from the relevant government agencies.
“Sabah Umno will lodge a police report on this matter, and we will ask MACC to open an investigation paper immediately,” he added.
He said Ma’amun had committed an offence under Section 23 of the MACC Act by abusing his position as an MP by appointing his brother to handle projects to benefit his family.
“I wonder if this is what they mean by the concept of ‘New Sabah’ and ‘New Malaysia’ that they have been talking about,” he added.
He confirmed that the police report and MACC complaint will be lodged tomorrow. -FMT
