KUALA LUMPUR: People who wish to can lodge reports against policemen who abused their powers by randomly checking handphones, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman said this and added that although the police have the investigative powers to check an individual's mobile device under the law, it must be done based on reasonable grounds and according to the standard operating procedures (SOP).
"I am aware that there are complaints of police officers using this power to randomly check hand-phones against the SOP. People going through this should be aware of their rights," said Mohd Azis when answering a question raised by Chan Ming Kai (PH-Alor Setar) in Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Nov 18).
He added that anyone who is affected can lodge a police report against the officer at the nearest police station if they feel it was done unreasonably.
Mohd Azis then said that those affected could also lodge a report at a different police station if they lack confidence in lodging a report at the station where the offending police officer is serving.
"They can also lodge a report with Bukit Aman's Integrity Department and the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) which has yet to be set up," he said.
Chan asked if people will be able to lodge reports against police officers who abuse their powers to randomly check their handphones without reasonable justification.
There was some chuckles from the floor when Mohd Azis took a supplementary question by Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (BN-Bera).
The Opposition chief asked if the police have carried out phone tapping activities, particularly against Opposition politicians.
"You were once a minister with the former government and you should know. As far as I am aware, there is no such thing," Mohd Azis said.- Star
