Orang Asli really need help, says Waytha Moorthy

Federal minister Waytha Moorthy says the Orang Asli ‘really need help”.
PETALING JAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waytha Moorthy says he will be engaging the finance ministry and state governments to secure greater funding for the Orang Asli community.
His plan comes in the wake of a call by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, for the federal and state governments to review allocations for the Orang Asli Development Department of Selangor (Jakoa) which has been declining since 2017.
Speaking to FMT, Waytha, whose ministry oversees Orang Asli affairs, said he was deeply touched by the ruler’s concern on the Orang Asli’s welfare.
“I will engage the finance ministry and all state governments to push for more funding for the Orang Asli communities. Understandably, at a federal and state level governments are facing economic challenges, but the Orang Asli really need help.”
His ministry, he said, was looking into ways to help the Orang Asli participate in economic activities in their natural environment, like modern farming and fish rearing,
“We will give them the necessary support and knowledge.”
He also urged all state governments to ensure that the Orang Asli’s rights to their ancestral land are protected. - FMT
