KOTA KINABALU: A gang of robbers, known as the “Luncai Gang”, has been smashed after a crime spree that lasted over a month spanning five districts.
Police arrested three men and a woman who had targeted 24-hour convenience stores here as well as in Ranau, Papar, Penampang and Telupid.
City police chief Habibi Majinji said the gang was responsible for hitting four such stores in just one hour on Oct 20.
Habibi said police finally got a break after one of the members was involved in an accident in Ranau last Friday. It was found that the car he was travelling in had been stolen.
He said the gang was involved in six robberies in the state capital and one each in the other districts.
“In the robberies last Oct 20, the suspects, aged between 25 and 30, struck at convenience stores near the outskirts of the city in Manggatal, Telipok and Sepanggar starting at 5am.
“We managed to identify them thanks to the CCTV recording,” he told reporters at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing here today.
Habibi said police also seized several items, including a car and bank cards from the group.
He said the group had made off with items worth some RM30,000 in their spree. - FMT
