UM climbs to 13th in QS Asia university ranking

PARLIAMENT | Universiti Malaya (UM) has climbed to the 13th spot of Asia's best universities in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings Asia 2020, Education Minister Maszlee Malik tells Dewan Rakyat today.
The minister cited the report released by the UK-based company which specialises in education services.
According to Maszlee, this is a new record for the public university which was achieved following the ministry's reforms since June last year.
He said UM came in at the top of Malaysian universities and 13th for Asia, compared with its previous position of 24th in Asia in 2018.

"(Besides this), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) also showed significant development, from 158th in 2018 to 119th for 2020.
"Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) climbed from the 290th in 2018 to 134th," he said in answering a question posed by Aaron Ago Dagang (GPS-Kanowit).
Aaron had requested the minister to tell the Dewan Rakyat how on the number of universities and students in Malaysia this year, including private institutions, and the global rankings of these universities.
Maszlee (photo) also added that besides looking at the overall ranking of a university, the ministry believes that achievement by an institution should also be weighed based on subject specialisations.
Taking UM as an example, he elaborated that the university is also at the 15th global university ranking in engineering courses based on the US News and World Report.
"Based on the QS World University Rankings 2020 that was released on June 19, UM had been listed as among 70 best universities in the world compared with its 118th spot in 2018.
"Four other public universities had also shown plausible achievement, where they had managed to be among the world's 100 best universities compared to where they were at in 2018.
"For example, the Universiti Putra Malaysia was previously at the 159th rank, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia at 160th, Universiti Sains Malaysia at 165th and UiTM at 217," Maszlee said. - Mkini
