Anwar Ibrahim has described the action of two PKR assemblypersons which led to a Malacca government motion being defeated by a single vote in the state assembly as unacceptable.
"I am in touch with them. I am supposed to meet them today or communicate with them,” said the PKR president.
"This is, of course, unacceptable because they have to respect the decision of the state and our position is they must support the chief minister's decision," he told journalists at the Parliament lobby today.
China Press had singled out PKR's Machap Jaya assemblyperson Ginie Lim and Rembia assemblyperson Muhammad Jailani Khamis, who it said were aligned to PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, for the motion's defeat yesterday.
The pair had reportedly left the House shortly before a vote was taken. The motion was defeated 13-12 votes.
Another Pakatan Harapan assemblyperson, G Saminathan from DAP, was also absent as he was among those detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012 for attempting to revive the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The motion was to nominate Malacca PKR chief Halim Bachik, who is reportedly aligned to Anwar, as a senator representing the state.
'Infighting or not, party's decisions must be respected'
Asked if the motion's defeat was linked to the infighting within PKR, Anwar said assemblypersons should support the state government regardless of their inclination.
"Infighting or not, the decision of the state and the party must be respected," he said.
Anwar was also quizzed on whether the action of the duo is linked to the speculation of an attempt to bring down the Malacca state government led by Amanah's Adly Zahari.
"I do not think so,” replied the PKR president.
“But in terms of our party, we will defend the (Pakatan) Harapan government including the Malacca chief minister," he added.
The protracted infighting between the factions of Anwar and Azmin had escalated in recent weeks after the latter's invitation to officiate the PKR Youth congress next month was rescinded and Harapan's routing in the Tanjung Piai by-election.
Speculation is also rife that Azmin is vying for the prime minister's post despite an agreement that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad would pass the baton to Anwar. - Mkini
