TG PIAI POLLS | MCA's Wee Jeck Seng has reminded Tanjung Piai constituents about his past programmes to send senior citizens for umrah in Mecca and promised to provide more of such trips if he wins the by-election.
At a ceramah in Pekan Nenas last night, Wee assured that he will keep his promise even though he no longer had the kind of resources he had when BN was the government.
"Do you recall ladies and gentleman, I had a special programme for the Malay community where those who are old and want to go to the holy land but cannot afford to do so.
"We did a programme to send 10 senior citizens to the holy land to perform their umrah...
"I can make a commitment - meaning a promise. A government's promise remains just a promise. But this is my promise and it will be sinful if I do not deliver.
"I promise that, god-willing, if we win this time, we want to send more of such senior citizens to the holy land for umrah," he said.
Wee (above) was the Tanjung Piai MP from 2008 until 2018 but lost the seat to Bersatu's Mohamed Farid Md Rafik in the 14th general election.
Farid passed away from a heart attack in September, triggering the by-election.
Previously when Wee was an MP, he had sponsored 10 senior citizens to perform the umrah from his MP's allowances.
While acknowledging that funds are limited in the opposition he will still find ways to deliver on his promise.
Wee said the sponsorship of such programmes was not due politics but it was his duty to serve as an MP.
The two frontrunners in the Tanjung Piai by-election are Wee and Bersatu's Karmaine Sardini.
The other candidates are Berjasa's Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz, Gerakan's Wendy Subramaniam and independent candidates Ang Chuan Lock and Faridah Aryani Abd Ghaffar.
Campaigning began last Saturday and Tanjung Piai voters will go to the polls on Nov 16. - Mkini
