KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador today confirmed that Baling MP Abdul Azeez Rahim was called to give his statement to the police yesterday over the audio clips released by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
Hamid said police would also be calling several others who were implicated in the audio clips soon but he declined to give more details.
“For now, we do not have further development on the authenticity of the audio recordings. Up to yesterday, we have only called Azeez to give his statement,” he said in a press conference at the Royal Malaysia Police College in Cheras.
Hamid said the probe on the audio clip was moving a bit slow as his officers were bogged down by other cases, including those involving hate speech.
On Jan 8, MACC released nine audio clips featuring, among others, former prime minister Najib Razak, his wife Rosmah Mansor, ex-MACC chief Dzulkifli Ahmad and the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed Zayed Al Nahyan.
They appeared to be conspiring to cover-up dealings linked to 1MDB and SRC International.
The clips were recordings of telephone calls between Jan 5, 2016 and July 29, 2016.
According to MACC, Azeez was among those involved in the conversations which also included former attorney-generals Abdul Gani Patail and Mohamed Apandi Ali, Ihsan Perdana managing director Shamsul Anwar Sulaiman, former SRC International director Suboh Md Yassin, former SRC International CEO Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil, Abdul Aziz Ismail and “Tan Sri Shukri”.
Apart from the UAE crown prince, there were also UAE president Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, IPIC chairman Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan and Mubadala Development Company CEO Khaldoon Al-Mubarak.
Najib’s stepson Riza Aziz, former Bank Negara officer Amhari Efendi Nazaruddin and Umno’s Khairul Azwan Harun were also named by MACC.
Azeez was the chairman of hajj pilgrims fund Tabung Haji during the time the telephone conversations took place.
Police previously recorded statements from MACC chief Latheefa Koya and deputy chief commissioner Azam Baki, and five other MACC officers who were involved in the expose. - FMT
