Dr Yunus Yassin with Professor Noam Chomsky
of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Education in Malaysia is at the bottom of the pits. If the education system can be placed on the right path in the next three years, then the PH can walk through the next general elections.
Here is the guy I would strongly recommend as our Minister of Education - Dr Yunus Yassin who holds a PhD from Cambridge University.
He founded and runs ASTI or the Association of Science Technology and Innovation which is now becoming world famous in Science education. Dr Yunus is also an expert on STEM education.
My recent trip to London was actually to accompany Dr Yunus who had been shortlisted by the QS University Rankings people to make a presentation on Science education at the Reimagine Education Awards and Conference.
"London - 2019 Reimagine Education Conference (8th December, Imperial College London, 9th-10th December, Queen Elizabeth II Centre, London) . . The Reimagine Education Awards is co-organized by QS Quacquarelli Symonds – global higher education think-tank responsible for the QS World University Rankings portfolio – and The Wharton School – Learning Lab."
Dr Yunus was the sole (and solo) representative from Malaysia. For comparison he was up against a full team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology etc.
In Malaysia through the efforts of Dr Yunus' ASTI and others, the Tamil schools now score the highest marks in Science and Mathematics.
For both 2018 and 2019 UPSR results, Tamil schools scored the highest 68.9% and 78.51% respectively in the Minimum Kompetensi, beating the Chinese schools and sekolah kebangsaan.
So this is a guy who knows education - particularly STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
We have had enough of these brainless dickhead politicians who do not know anything but claim to know everything.
I hope Dr Mahathir will read this. I would encourage Dr Mahathir to take a bold step and appoint Dr Yunus - a highly qualified and highly experienced person - who has a great passion for education - as our next Minister of Education.
