Dzulkefly: Health Ministry to probe cause behind MOs' contract termination

SERDANG: The Health Ministry will launch a probe to find out why several of its medical officers (MO) in Sibu had their contracts abruptly terminated.
"It's unfortunate this has happened. I will immediately investigate this matter to get to the bottom of it. What more when we are in need of medical officers with talent and credibility," said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (pic).
He was asked about the incident where several MOs had their contracts terminated without cause recently.
"I will immediately look at them one by one in order to give full justice," he said when met by reporters at the closing of the Antibiotic Fun Run 2020 here.
Two such MOs, Dr Wong Woan Hui and Dr Bong Ing Hui from the Sibu General Hospital (SGH), had received letters informing them that their contracts would not be renewed on Nov 13 last year.
It was reported that after getting her paediatric degree from the University of Southampton in 2018, Dr Bong Ing Hui was offered a lucrative offer to work in Britain.
"I was offered a seven-year job in the United Kingdom but let it go as I wanted to serve my country," Dr Bong told a press conference organised by the SUPP Education Bureau on Saturday (Jan 18).
Both Sibu-born doctors are now in limbo. They were notified by the ministry last Nov 13 that their contracts, which were already in the second year, would not be renewed.
She said it came as a shock as there was no indication that the contracts would be terminated, nor any grace period given.
"They just sent us a letter saying that our contracts had been terminated," said Dr Bong, 29.
She said they were under the impression that their contracts would be renewed.
"They did not give us a reason," Dr Bong said, adding that she and Dr Wong did not have any disciplinary record at SGH. - Star
