e-Tunai user data won't be abused - Guan Eng

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said the data collected from the e-Tunai Rakyat scheme will not be abused for commercial reasons.
"The information collected is for the government and will not be shared with other companies," Lim said in Petaling Jaya this morning.
Lim was at the SS2 wet market to promote the e-Tunai Rakyat scheme, which involved a government incentive of RM30 for new e-wallet sign-ups.
He said that the programme was managed by Khazanah Nasional Bhd, a sovereign wealth fund.

"You might be worried that someone is mining the data. Not to worry. The government is not a commercial enterprise.
"For commercial organisations, some of them will be interested in consumption patterns and use the information.
"However, the government is not running a business so we won't allow (businesses access)," he said.
The e-Tunai Rakyat scheme involves three digital payment companies - Axiata Digital Sdn Bhd (which operates the Boost application), Touch 'N Go Sdn Bhd (Touch 'N Go) and Grab Holdings Ltd (GrabPay).
Of the three companies, Axiata Digital and Touch 'N Go are indirectly held by interests owned by the government. Grab Holdings is incorporated in Singapore.
On when the government hopes to "fully digitise" transactions, Lim explained that the process will have to take time because the rural folk are still not used to the concept.
"Tun (prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad) wants immediate implementation because this is an important step towards transparency and accountability.
"If (one day) we go completely cashless, we can cut down a lot of corruption," he said. - Mkini
