The Election Commission (EC) will soon be going to secondary schools nationwide to carry out simulations of the voting process as part of their voter education program.
EC chairperson Azhar Azizan Harun (above) has also assured that the commission is not out to indoctrinate students through this programme.
“The module is ready. We will make the module public so that nobody can raise an allegation that we are trying to indoctrinate students.
“We are not in the business of indoctrinating anybody, but we want to educate,” he said in a press conference at the EC headquarters today.
The EC has done a trial run of the simulation in a school last year, Azhar added, and it was very well received.
As such, he said, the EC plans to go down to 2,400 schools this year to carry out the simulations for Form 4 students.
They will only target Form 4 students as students in that year are taking the Civic and Citizenship Education subject, he said.
Last year, Parliament passed amendments to the Federal Constitution to lower the voting age and candidacy age to 18 years old and to implement automatic voter registration. - Mkini
