PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has once again gone against the Pakatan Harapan manifesto with his decision to become the acting education minister, says PKR veteran and staunch Mahathir critic Syed Husin Ali.
The former PKR vice-president said there was no clear indication from the Prime Minister’s Office on how long Mahathir will act as the minister, after Maszlee Malik resigned last week.
“Previously, he had given himself the role of education minister and then he withdrew the decision for going against the PH manifesto, after being criticised by party members and the public.
“So what he is doing now is that he is going against the same thing (PH manifesto) he went against previously.
“This move is embarrassing because we don’t know how long he plans on acting as education minister. It can be a month or it can be a year. In the end, people can say Mahathir dismissed Maszlee so he can take back the role,” he told FMT.
Earlier today, the PMO said the Cabinet, at a meeting on Wednesday, agreed to appoint Mahathir as acting education minister until a new minister is appointed.
The appointment took effect on Jan 3, a day after Maszlee resigned on the “advice” of the prime minister.
The PH manifesto, which limits the tenure of the prime minister to two terms, says he cannot hold any other ministerial portfolio, especially that of the finance minister.
Syed Husin said he finally understood what Maszlee meant when he said in his resignation statement he was “surrendering the post to the prime minister”.
“This is why I say Mahathir is Mahathir and he will always do as he pleases,” he said.
This is the second time that Mahathir is helming the education portfolio.
He had held the post for four years – from 1974 to 1978 – under the administration of the third prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein. - FMT
