PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad has played down a report on the possibility of a collaboration with PAS, saying it was his job to meet “everybody”.
“Yes, there is a picture of me greeting Haji Hadi (PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang). I greet everybody including unkind reporters,” the prime minister said.
“That is my job, I meet everybody, even though these people were my enemies.”
This morning, FMT reported of a possible new realignment that could thrust the Islamist party into federal power, following a dip in support for the ruling coalition.
The new alignment, bringing together forces aligned to Mahathir with the clout that PAS holds in the northern Malay heartland, will have dire consequences for DAP and Anwar Ibrahim.
FMT also reported that a meeting between Hadi and Mahathir had been arranged.
Mahathir said he worked with former prime minister Najib Razak before and now, he was working with DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang.
“You see I don’t hold it against him (Lim). If we can do something that is good, I will work with him,”
Mahathir also dismissed the notion that working with PAS was a sign that Pakatan Harapan was weak.
He said PAS had met him as they were concerned about certain matters.
“I said it is easy, if we do something wrong don’t support us in Parliament. If we do something right, although you are in opposition but because what is being done is good for the country, please support us, that is all.”
Mahathir went on to say that there would be instances when PAS would support certain laws in Parliament. - FMT
