Large crowds gather as Kimanis rivals begin march to nomination centre

KIMANIS POLLS |  Thousands of supporters of both Parti Warisan Sabah and BN-Umno have gathered at Beaufort in advance of the filing of nominations for the Kimanis parliamentary by-election.
Warisan and its ally Pakatan Harapan leaders gathered at Beaufort Sport Complex which is 600 metres away from the nomination centre.
Warisan leaders and approximately 1,000 supporters who were clad in white and carrying Warisan flags were seen waiting patiently to begin the march to the nomination centre.
Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal will lead the candidate Karim Bujang to nominate centre.
Also present are Pakatan Harapan chief secretary Saifuddin Abdullah, Bersatu president and Kedah Chief Minister Mukhriz Mahathir and Warisan secretary-general Loretto Padua.
On the Umno/BN side, candidate Mohamad Alamin (photo) arrived early to greet approximately 1,000 supporters gathered on the other side of the nomination centre at Dewan Datuk Sri Panglima Mohd Dun Banir, Beaufort.
They are waiting for the arrival of BN deputy chairperson Mohamad Hasan.
It is not yet known if any independent candidate will join the fray.
Nominations are due to be open at 9am and close an hour later.
Kimanis is a semi-urban seat of 29644 registered voters where 63.16 percent are Muslim bumiputera, 30.67 percent non-Muslim bumiputra, 3.59 percent Chinese and 2.58 percent others.
The by-election was called after the Federal Court on Dec 2 last year upheld an Election Court ruling that nullified Anifah Aman's 2018 victory for the Kimanis parliamentary seat.
In 2018 general election, Anifah had won the seat with a 156-vote majority, securing 11,942 votes against Karim’s 11,786 votes while another candidate, Jaafar Ismail of Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah, had obtained 1,300 votes.
Warisan had filed the election petition on June 18, 2018, to challenge the election results.
