Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has decided to initiate contempt of court action against MACC and its chief over the release of nine audio clips last week, purportedly of phone conversations between Najib and several individuals.
This was confirmed by his lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah today.
"Yes, we have decided. But I can't tell you the details," he told Malaysiakini when met at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex this afternoon.
When asked further on the nature of the action, he said: "Let me tell you. What I promised last week, I have kept my promise."
It is understood that Shafee could not reveal the details at this juncture as the action filed by Najib was still ex-parte, which means it is for the interest of one party.
Last week, Shafee told reporters that Najib's legal team was contemplating to cite MACC and particularly its, chief Latheefa Koya for contempt after she revealed to a press conference the audio recordings that include conversations that touched on 1MDB-related issues.
Among the conversations revealed by Latheefa was one between Najib and Dzulkfli Ahmad, who was then an officer with the Attorney-General's Chambers, in 2016 over MACC's findings into 1MDB.
Another was a conversation purportedly between Najib and the Crown Prince of UAE on the United States Department of Justice's investigation into 1MDB that concerned Najib's stepson Riza Aziz. - Mkini
