MACC's release of wiretapped recordings of a prime minister's phone conversation can affect the country's diplomatic relations and its interests with other nations, said Najib Abdul Razak.
The former premier said this would be much so when the recordings released to the public include conversations with other heads of state.
"I want to repeat that this is a revelation that has never happened in the history of our country.
"And secondly, I was a sitting prime minister at that time.
"And whether any parties have the right to do wiretapping on conversations of a prime minister, furthermore the conversation was with another head of state, this can have an impact on Malaysia's diplomatic relationships and interests with other countries," he told reporters this evening.
Najib was giving his further response to MACC's press conference this morning, where its chief Latheefa Koya (below) released to the media nine audio recordings between Najib and other individuals in 2016.
Among the recordings include Najib's conversation with UAE president Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the Crown Prince of UAE Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Najib added that he and his lawyers want to find out who did the wiretappings on his phone.
According to him, there are government agencies that could have done so, but they must follow the rules and regulations.
"Whether in this case they did it by the book, we will investigate," said Najib.
"Whether it is legal or illegal. If it's illegal, they will have to answer for it."
Asked whether he would consider suing those who snooped on his telephone conversations, the politician said he would have to study the matter first before making any decision. - Mkini
