What about Maszlee’s deputy, asks Najib

Najib Razak asked in a Facebook post, ‘His deputy escaped?’ after Maszlee Malik resigned as the education minister.
PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has taken a swipe at Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching following Maszlee Malik’s resignation from his ministerial post, seemingly questioning if she would resign too.
In a one-liner Facebook post, Najib simply said: “His deputy escaped?”
Teo was present at the education ministry earlier today when Maszlee announced his resignation as the education minister, some 20 months after he was appointed to the high-profile post with expectations of major reforms in Malaysia’s education sector.
She did not address the media.
Maszlee said he was handing his post back to Dr Mahathir Mohamad, adding that he was doing so based on advice from the prime minister.
His tenure as minister was blighted with a series of controversies related to the education sector, with critics calling for his removal from the Cabinet.
Maszlee had been criticised for linking racial quotas for the pre-university matriculation course to alleged discrimination by some non-Malay companies against the Bumiputeras.
Maszlee’s tenure was also marred by the distribution of a comic book on China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The home ministry subsequently banned the book on grounds it promoted communism and socialism.
In recent days, he was criticised by Chinese and Tamil educationists, particularly Dong Jiao Zong, over the introduction of Jawi in schools nationwide. - FMT
