CORONAVIRUS | Ipoh Timur MP Wong Kah Woh has urged the government to extend the application period for the Bantuan Prihatin Nasional (BPN) cash aid until after the Movement Control Order (MCO) is over.
Wong (photo) said some applicants need assistance from the service centres of elected representatives but the offices cannot open during the MCO, which started on March 18 and has been extended until April 28.
"With the extension of the MCO until April 28 and the uncertainty on whether it will be further extended, the service centres of MPs and state assemblypersons cannot open and effectively provide services to the public during this period, particularly about the registration for BPN," he said in a statement today.
Wong said at present, the deadline is April 30 and is worried that if the MCO is lifted on April 28, there would be a flood of people at service centres during the two-day window.
Malaysia had been under a partial lockdown since March 19 to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Under the MCO, all non-essential businesses and services must close while people are only allowed to leave their homes for approved reasons.
Foreigners are also not allowed into the country while Malaysians cannot leave.
The BPN cash aid of between RM500 and RM1,600 was announced as part of measures to provide relief amid an economic downturn brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The cash aid is aimed at the B40 and M40 communities. - Mkini
