KOTA KINABALU: A woman delivered her baby at a popular square in the city here last night with the help of relatives and several police officers as she could not wait for the ambulance to arrive.
Pahmah Nastih, 38, was rushed from her home at Kampung Kasuapan, Pulau Gaya to the city jetty by her brother-in-law, Halilih Ladjahali.
Halilih, 50, said he and his wife had taken Pahmah there by boat at 10.30pm.
On reaching the jetty, which was about 10 minutes’ boat ride from their village, he tried to hail any passing vehicle that he could find.
“But there was none due to the movement control order (MCO),” he said, adding that he then asked several police officers on patrol there to help them call an ambulance.
He and his wife helped Pahmah to the main road at Todak Square but she said that she could not wait for the ambulance.
“Two policemen and a woman officer were on their MCO patrol there,” he added. “They immediately reached out to help us.”
By the time the ambulance arrived, the baby had been delivered with the help of the woman officer.
Medical personnel took Pahmah and the baby to the Women’s and Children Hospital in Likas.
Explaining that Pahmah had been staying with him and his wife as her husband was away at sea, Halilih said doctors told them that both mother and child were in good condition.
Pulau Gaya was placed under tighter travel restrictions yesterday after a man who committed suicide earlier this month was discovered to have had Covid-19. - FMT
