After a one-hour meeting with Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Kuah assemblyperson Mohd Firdaus Ahmad said he was told, among others, to continue the fight for the sake of religion, people and the country.
"My meeting with Mahathir lasted about an hour and what was important was that he impressed upon me the message to fight for the sake of religion, people and the country," Mohd Firdaus said to Malaysiakini today.
Asked about Mahathir's views on whether he should decide to support a Perikatan Nasional (PN) government in Kedah, Mohd Firdaus said the former prime minister had advised him to consider the decision thoroughly first (tepuk dada, pilih selera).
Malaysiakini reported that Mohd Firdaus will meet with Mahathir this evening, two days after the former had said he would support PN in forming a new government in Kedah on Tuesday.
The Kuah assemblyperson had said at that time that he had not signed any statutory declaration (SD), even though Kedah PAS claimed yesterday that they have presented 23 SDs to the Kedah ruler Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah.
The SDs were purportedly signed by 23 assemblypersons, including two PKR representatives who have since quit the party and four Bersatu representatives who have thrown their support behind Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
On Tuesday, Firdaus had told Malaysiakini that he and three other Bersatu reps support the formation of a new government after Pakatan Harapan purportedly lost the majority.
He had said they were "following the tide and instructions from the party".
Two of the Bersatu reps, Halimaton Shaadiah Saad (Bukit Kayu Hitam) and Juhari Bulat (Ayer Hangat) had acknowledged they support PN.
For the record, the Kuah and Ayer Hangat state seats are located within the Langkawi parliamentary seat which was won by Mahathir.
Bersatu's Guar Chempedak assemblyperson Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail has also been linked to the SDs but have yet to issue any statement on this matter.
If Kedah PN truly does have the support of all four of the Bersatu reps, they will have the majority in the state with 23 seats compared to Harapan with 13 seats.
Meanwhile, when asked what his decision is after meeting with Mahathir, Mohd Firdaus implied that he would support PN.
"Mahathir advised me to fight for the party and not for myself.
"I will decide. Insya Allah if that is what I think is best," he said. - Mkini
