CORONAVIRUS | Police today released the schedule for those stranded in their hometowns to travel inter-state back to their place of residence and work.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation director Huzir Mohamed (above) said those who had previously registered interest to travel interstate on the Gerak Malaysia app won't require any approval as long as they abide by the provided schedule.
The travel dates based on the point of departure are as follow:
May 7 - From Kuala Lumpur
May 8 - From Perak, Johor and Kelantan
May 9 - From Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Malacca and Pahang
May 10 - From Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Terengganu
Huzir said the police will try to ensure a smooth journey for motorists.
"For the travel this time, there won't be any QR code issued. We can identify the applicant.
"We're not out to find fault. We just want traffic flow (to be smooth)
"We won't issue any approval notice for those who have applied. We trust the existing system and we trust the cases (return journey) are genuine," he told a press conference in Bukit Aman today.
Huzir said the data gathered from the Gerak Malaysia app is to provide police with an idea of where there would be a high concentration of vehicles and deploy the necessary assets to facilitate the traffic flow.
"Why do we have a schedule? Because we don't want everyone to arrive concurrently as most people's destination are in the Klang Valley," he said.
Huzir added that as it is the Ramadan month, he expects many people to begin travelling after sahur or breaking fast time.
He said if there is more than one traveller in a vehicle, those who are aged 16 and above are also encouraged to download and register on the Gerak Malaysia app.
Huzir added that those who do not have the app, they may make a written application at the nearest police station but should first make an appointment.
He said as of today, 1,238,510 people had downloaded the Gerak Malaysia app and 503,276 made applications to travel interstate.
Huzir warned those who do not travel according to the provided schedule could face action.
He also reminded that food won't be served at rest stops along the highway and surau will be closed. Only the toilets will be opened.
He said travellers should remain in their vehicles at the rest stops and may only step out to use the toilet.
Huzir said travellers should not gather at the rest stops or hold prayers in groups.
He added that petrol stations along the highways will operate from 6am to 12pm. - Mkini
