'Conditional MCO is about balancing life and livelihood' - DG

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The Health Ministry has backed the government’s move to relax rulings and declare a conditional movement control order.
This is because the country has progressed into the recovery phase of the Covid-19 outbreak.
At his daily briefing this afternoon, ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah explained that healthcare facilities were no longer strained as daily new cases has dropped consistently below 100.
The ministry’s ability to raise testing capacity beyond 16,500 tests a day has also helped keep new infections under control.
After three phases of the order, he said Malaysia had managed to flatten the epidemic curve.
“Now the response is we have to look into striking the right balance between life and livelihood.
“We have done MCO One, Two and Three [...] the intention and objective of MCO is basically to flatten the curve and we have achieved that.
“Now it is the next phase. The next phase is to manage the virus in our community,” he explained.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced today that many economic and social sectors will be allowed to reopen beginning this Monday (May 4).
He noted that the movement control order incurs a high cost on the economy to the tune of RM2.4 billion per day.
As the economy reopens, the government has also announced sector-specific standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent another wave of Covid-19 infections.
Restaurants, for example, will now be allowed to serve dine-in customers.
No more than four people would be allowed per table, and tables must be set at least two metres apart. Customers will need to provide personal identification details and agree to have their temperature recorded.
Noor Hisham today urged businesses to abide by these regulations or risk being placed under lockdown should a virus outbreak occur.
Aside from businesses, the government will also allow outdoor sports like jogging, badminton, golf and running in groups of less than 10 people.
Mass gatherings of any kind remain prohibited. - Mkini
