Flash floods hit Penang after downpour


Floods in Balik Pulau.
GEORGE TOWN: Flash floods have inundated several areas in Penang after a downpour on Sunday (May 17) morning.
In Teluk Bahang on the island, over 80 houses at Taman Nelayan Kuala Sungai Pinang, Kampung Sungai Rusa, Taman Manggis, Bukit Kechil, Kampung Air Putih and Sungai Pinang were affected by flood waters rising up to 0.6m.
At Taman Manggis Indah in Balik Pulau, a 78-year-old woman was trapped in her home during the floods, which affected eight houses in the area.
At 2.39pm, the woman was rescued by the Balik Pulau Fire and Rescue Department.
Meanwhile, in south Seberang Prai, flash floods hit Taman Lima Kongsi, Kampung Sungai Baong, Jalan Persekutuan Valdor, Kampung Valdor and Kampung Masjid Baru, with flood waters reaching 0.1 to 0.3m high.
At central Seberang Prai, roads at Jalan Tembikai and Jalan Kebun Sireh were affected by flood waters rising up to 0.3m.
Penang flood mitigation committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the floods occurred due to heavy rain within a short period of time. - Star
