Pakatan Harapan, the Bersatu faction aligned to its chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Warisan today issued a joint statement expressing concerns over a series of actions undertaken by the Perikatan Nasional government led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
They said Muhyiddin's government is undoing institutional reforms and disallowing check and balance.
The Harapan party heads together with Mahathir and Warisan president Shafie Apdal made the statement after a meeting in preparation of the one-day Parliament sitting tomorrow.
"The meeting raised concerns at the actions of Muhyiddin's government which appear to be courting the support of MPs by offering them in government-linked companies and ambassadorship with equivalent position to a minister.
"This is an unhealthy practice that destroys the institutional reforms we have undertaken in the last 22 months," they said.
They also expressed concern at the discharge not amounting to acquittal granted to Riza Abdul Aziz over money laundering charged involving 1MDB funds. Riza is the step-son of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"It is a sign that several major cases involving politicians may also receive the same settlement," they said.
The joint statement was signed by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Mahathir and Shafie.
The statement also named Anwar as the Harapan chairperson, a position previously occupied by Mahathir until Muhyiddin took Bersatu out of Harapan against the Langkawi MP's wishes.
The leaders said they have unanimously decided to challenge Muhyiddin's government which they say lack legitimacy.
They also criticised the premier for disallowing the Dewan Rakyat from testing if he truly commands majority support in the House.
"We are satisfied that the government is only holding the sitting for the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong's royal address and reiterate that Parliament should be allowed to sit for longer to address the people's problems," they said.
The leaders added that apart from the problem about Muhyiddin's majority, the new PN government had set up several new ministries and their budgets have not been approved by Parliament.
They added that the government's RM250 billion stimulus plan to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic was also not tabled by Parliament.
They said Putrajaya's decision to limit the sitting to a day and only for the royal address means all the issues mentioned cannot be addressed.
"We unanimously state that Parliament is the ultimate democratic institution that must function properly to ensure check and balance is not impeded - where the prime minister's majority must be tested and confirmed and laws affecting the people discussed, debated and decided," they said. - Mkini
