CORONAVIRUS | Authorities have conducted a fresh round of raids against undocumented migrants in Selayang.
The operation took place in the enhanced movement control order (MCO) areas around the Kuala Lumpur wholesale market.
The move comes as the enhanced MCO is expected to be lifted in two days, on May 13.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim confirmed the operation took place early this morning and was led by the Immigration Department.
"This was an Immigration Department operation. The police and a number of other agencies provided security assistance," he told journalists in a WhatsApp message.
Other agencies involved were the People's Volunteer Corp (Rela), Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Health Department and other related agencies.
According to the China Press, the operation which began at 6am, saw hundreds of undocumented migrants detained up to 10am.
A helicopter was also used during the operation, its report added.
Previously, the authorities had also conducted raids against undocumented migrants in previous enhanced MCO areas with a view of lifting the lockdowns.
Defence Minister Ismail Sabri, who is also the senior minister overseeing the MCO, had previously defended the raids.
"That was why I said when the enhanced MCO ends, there is nowhere for the undocumented migrants to go. That is (also) why we are housing them at immigration depots," Ismail had said.
Days after the raids, the lockdown was lifted in several locations in Kuala Lumpur and parts of Selayang.
The MCO is aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19 and "enhanced" measures are taken if there is a spike of cases in the area.
To date, the following locations in Selayang are still under an enhanced MCO until May 12.
