Malaysians have no excuse for driving under the influence as there are ample e-hailing services available, said Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong.
Speaking to the press after visiting the Bukit Bintang MRT station today, Wee said he was saddened by the death of police personnel Safwan Mohamad Ismail who was struck by a drunk driver yesterday morning.
"There is no reason for someone to drink and drive. We have e-hailing (services).
"Anyone who is drunk should use e-hailing (services to get home)," he said.
Safwan, 31, passed away after being struck by a four-wheel-drive vehicle near the Kajang Selatan toll booth along the Kajang-Seremban Highway (Lekas).
Meanwhile, Wee said his ministry was studying amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 to tighten laws regarding driving under the influence.
"I view this seriously... We will review amendments to the law, especially Section 41 and 45," he said.
Section 41 referred to reckless driving while Section 44 and 45 referred to causing death or injury while driving under the influence.
The previous Pakatan Harapan administration had pledged to amend laws during the March sitting of Parliament which had been postponed.
At the time, the previous administration said they were looking to increase penalties for driving under the influence to a maximum 20 years jail term, up from three to 10 years currently. - Mkini
