MAEPS now Covid-19 quarantine, treatment centre for undocumented migrants

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) in Serdang has been turned into a Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centre for undocumented migrants.
This is according to Defence Minister Ismail Sabri who told a daily press conference today that all the arrested undocumented migrants who are tested positive for Covid-19 will be sent there.
Patients who were earlier quarantined and treated at MAEPS have been transferred to the Sungai Buloh Hospital, he said.
"There is a surge of new Covid-19 positive cases among undocumented migrants at three immigration detention depots in Semenyih, Bukit Jalil and KLIA," he said.
"Those who are tested positive for Covid-19 will be quarantined and treated at MAEPS. MAEPS will become the specific quarantine centre for undocumented migrants," he said.
The senior minister who is in charge of security said he had visited MAEPS earlier today.
The temporary makeshift hospital was fenced up with barbed wire and security officers deployed to ensure the undocumented migrants remain quarantined, he added.
He said a total of 4,342 undocumented migrants were detained at the three depots with 1,654 at Semenyih 1,334 at Bukit Jalil depot and 1,358 at KLIA.
A total of 108 undocumented migrants detained at three depots were found infected with Covid-19 as of noon yesterday.
These undocumented migrants were arrested before or during the movement control order.
Ismail Sabri said all undocumented migrants, immigration staff and those who serviced the depots, including food suppliers, would need to undergo a comprehensive Covid-19 test.
"If the migrants test negative for Covid-19, they will stay at the depots. Those tested positive will be sent to MAEPS," he said, adding the arrangement will prevent an outbreak of the disease at the depots.
Ismail Sabri said locals need not worry about the immigration depot clusters as the undocumented migrants were locked down at the depots.
As such, he said it was very unlikely that the virus would spread outside of the detention depots. - Mkini
