Maszlee questions Mahdzir's TNB appointment

Malaysiakini
Bersatu supreme council member Maszlee Malik today appeared to have raised doubts on whether it was right to appoint Mahdzir Khalid as the new Tenaga Nasional Berhad chairperson.
In a lengthy essay on his Facebook page, Maszlee said he joined Bersatu back in early 2018 because the party promised to fight graft.
However, he said "a character" who was involved in a solar project for schools in rural Sarawak was now given a position in a GLC which was "also related to energy".
Although Maszlee did not name anyone, Mahdzir's appointment as the head of TNB was confirmed on May 8.
The solar project scandal came to light during the Pakatan Harapan administration and is currently the subject of a corruption trial involving Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Rosmah was accused of receiving RM6.5 million in kickbacks from the project.
Maszlee was the education minister when the government was probing the matter while Mahdzir (below) was his predecessor.
Mahdzir, a key witness in the trial, had testified that he was pressured to approve the RM1.25 billion deal by Najib, Rosmah and her aide Rizal Mansor.
Maszlee, meanwhile, said he had joined Bersatu because Malays had to save other Malays from the culture of corruption, abuse of power and money politics which had become a norm.
"Everyone knew the system was broken for a long time. There were big scandals and there were extraordinary cases involving breach of trust. (We) slowly unravelled it.
"We don't have to go far. In terms of (the Education Ministry) there was a rural solar project for schools in Sarawak which is currently the subject of a trial.
"Note how some characters are arguing among themselves to save their own skin. It is unfortunate the trial was not completed before the Harapan government fell.
"Today, a character directly involved in the project has a chairperson position in a GLC which is related to energy," wrote Maszlee.
