PAS to stand aside in Chini, back BN candidate

Malaysiakini

Pahang PAS commissioner Rosli Abdul Jabar has confirmed that the party will not field a candidate in the July 4 Chini by-election, thereby clearing the way for Barisan Nasional to represent the new Perikatan Nasional (PN) ruling coalition.
Rosli (above) told Free Malaysia Today that his party would be mobilising its election machinery in support of the PN candidate.
“Looking at the current political situation, PN’s candidate will have a big chance of winning the polls in Chini,” he said.
In the last election, Umno's Abu Bakar Harun garnered 10,027 votes and won by a 4,622 majority over Mohd Fadhil Noor Abdul Karim of PAS, who got 5,405 votes.
Representing Pakatan Harapan, Bersatu's Mohamad Razali Ithnain came a distant third with just 1,065 votes and lost his deposit.
Yesterday, Umno Veterans' Club secretary-general Mustapha Yaakub suggested that Pakatan Harapan gives his party and its partners a walkover in the Chini by-election so as to avoid costly polls during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"This will save the cost for the Election Commission (EC) and it will help the government in its effort to combat Covid-19.
"It is impossible for Harapan/PKR to challenge the coalition of BN/Umno and PAS," Mustapha added.
The Chini state seat by-election was called after the death of incumbent Abu Bakar on May 6.
Voting has been fixed for on July 4, with nomination day on June 20.
PN current holds 33 of the 42 seats in the Pahang Legislative Assembly. Umno has 24 seats, PAS has eight and MCA has one. Harapan holds nine seats through DAP (seven) and PKR (two). - Mkini
