PETALING JAYA: Taxi drivers whose driver cards have expired should renew the document in order to receive the one-off government aid of RM600 each, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Transport Minister said the Government had agreed to allow the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) to renew their cards, provided drivers submitted all necessary documents by July 1.
He said there were many who had yet to receive the RM600 aid for various reasons.
"These include an estimated 30,000 taxi drivers who are unable to receive the payment due to having a lapsed driver's card, which is a mandatory obligation to road users' safety for public transport operator license holders," he said in a statement on Saturday (May 23), adding that this included drivers whose cards lapsed before the movement control order (MCO) was implemented on March 18.
So far, Dr Wee said a total of 29,447 taxi drivers with a valid driver's cards have received the RM600 aid during the MCO when the Finance Ministry disbursed the fund on April 2.
To ensure those with expired driver's cards enjoy the same benefit, he called on them to submit all necessary documents for renewal at Apad by July 1.
"Apad will further advise drivers who have renewed of the next step to register for the RM600 payment," he said, adding that payment would be administered through Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) and interbank giro facilities.
"For drivers without BSN accounts, they need to update their bank account details through semakprihatin.treasury.gov.my with their MyKad numbers.
"Drivers who are insolvent (bankrupt) can refer to the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department through their website for further assistance," he added.
Dr Wee urged all public transport operators, including taxi operators, to comply with the relevant regulations and not to operate without valid documents.
"Always be responsible on the road and ensure the safety of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at all times.
"I wish all a Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri and have a pleasant and safe holiday season," he said.
The RM600 one-off aid for taxi drivers was announced by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a stimulus package on Feb 27 to help cushion the effects of the Covid-19 outbreak. - Star
