Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari today dismissed talk that a group of PKR state assemblypersons are waiting for the right time to defect to Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Stating that he has high confidence in his fellow state representatives, Amirudin (photo) said he believed that the rumours were an attempt to shift the people's attention from problems that are currently faced by the PN federal government.
"Those who made up this story are daydreaming. I am confident with the stand of our assemblypersons. During a recent press statement together with other Harapan leaders, they stated their commitment to the Harapan state government and its policies.
"I believe these (rumours) are a cheap propaganda stunt that attempts to shake the credibility of the state government.
"This also might be an attempt to shift the attention from some people's failure to do their job in fighting Covid-19, or trying to cover up a bigger problem that they have now due to disunity in the PN government," Amirudin said.
He was responding to a request for comment on the rumour, which claimed that more than 10 PKR assemblypersons in Selangor are ready to leave the state Pakatan Harapan for the new coalition, which now holds the federal power.
Those who are purportedly ready to do this were said to be from the camp of Mohd Azmin Ali, who left PKR to join a Bersatu faction loyal to Muhyiddin Yassin in February.
Rumours about more PKR assemblypersons defecting to PN in states that are still controlled by Harapan became rife this week, especially after two in Kedah announced that they had quit PKR to support PN in the state.
Meanwhile, Amirudin said that he, however, would not stop anyone from leaving the Selangor Harapan coalition if they have decided to do so.
"I am confident our assemblypersons would stay with us.
"But, if they have made their decision (to choose otherwise), I would not stop them. I hold the same view as Anwar Ibrahim, that this is a democratic country.
"However, they must think about the pros and cons, and the impact of their decisions," said Amirudin. - Mkini
