A total 42.1kg of unsold food at a Ramadan bazaar in Section 17, Shah Alam, were rescued in a food waste reduction programme run by the Shah Alam City Council to reduce food waste.
The programme also rescued 16.4 litres of unsold drinks from going to waste on the first day of the programme yesterday, MBSA said in a Facebook posting today.
"The objective is to reduce food waste and stop it from being sent directly to landfill," it said.
The unsold food and drinks were distributed to those in need while other organic wastes were composted, it said.
The programme is held in collaboration with NGOs WWF Malaysia, Gema Youth, the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Harmony club and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi).
Earlier, the NGO Food Aid Foundation estimated that 25 to 35 percent of food waste daily during Ramadan originate from Ramadan bazaars.
This is because traders often produce more than they can sell, in hopes of higher sales, its operations director Hayati Ismail told the New Straits Times.
Meanwhile, the Solid Waste Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) said during Ramadan, hotels and restaurants produce about 20,000 tonnes of food waste a week in the month of Ramadan. - Mkini
