Abang Jo in denial about the state of Sarawak, says Soon Koh

Wong Soon Koh (left) said Abang Johari Openg is pursuing policies that will further the social divide in the state.

PETALING JAYA: Sarawak opposition leader Wong Soon Koh says his former coalition mate Abang Johari Openg is in denial about the state Sarawak is in, and on the role they both played in the failures of the past.

The PSB president was formerly with SUPP and UPP, and has held several state cabinet positions since winning the Bawang Assan seat in 1991 as part of the Sarawak Barisan Nasional. Abang Johari was then a PBB leader in BN.

Wong said the GPS chairman was accurate in saying that the pair had stood together when decisions were made that PSB has now criticised in its manifesto.

“Abang Johari is right that we should be blaming ourselves for being part of a government that failed the people and broke promises for so many years,” Wong said in a statement.

“The difference between him and me is that Abang Johari is not admitting the past government’s failures, but instead making more promises of lavish projects and spending hard earned state reserves.

“He is now pursuing policies which will further the social divide and increase the gap between the rich and the poor, which leads to its own negative consequences. Simply put, Yang Amat Berhormat Chief Minister is in denial.”

Unlike Abang Johari, Wong said he could no longer be a part of a ruling bloc that had allowed Sarawak to lag so far behind much of the country and collaborated with race and religion based parties like PAS and Umno out of “political convenience”.

“I could, and can no longer, stand by and watch how Sarawakians are being divided, ruled and manipulated by Putrajaya. I cannot stand to see the erosion of Sarawak’s rights under MA63.

“I resigned so I could help to form a new government to create new hope for our children and their children. - FMT
