PETALING JAYA: Adenan Satem was a hugely popular Sarawak leader who rose to become chief minister in 2014. Sadly, he died while in office just three years later.
Now, his son Azizul Annuar Adenan is hoping to step out of his father’s long shadow as he contests for the first time in the state elections. But he is out to prove he is his own man.
The Tanjong Datu GPS candidate wants voters to know he is not riding on his family’s legacy and popularity, the dayakdaily.com reported.
Azizul admitted that the pressure was on him to win the seat and expectations were high due to the family history in the constituency.
“But I am a strong believer that I can do it on my own, and I want to be measured that way. I want to step out of the shadows and do this myself, to prove to the people that I can,” he was quoted as saying by the portal.
He added that having taken part in major competitions as a student, he was used to the pressure.
However, Azizul also said he was determined to continue his father’s legacy.
He knows what to do. After all, although this is his maiden election appearance, the 30-year-old has helped his father serve the constituents in Tanjong Datu for a long time.
He went on to say that if elected, he would continue developing the infrastructure and economy in the area.
Azizul said his father had a blueprint to turn the southern zone into a tourism hub and improve basic amenities including water and electricity supply.
“I pledge to continue the blueprint, make it successful and bring this constituency to new heights as per my father’s mission and that of our chief minister Abang Johari (Openg).”
Adenan, fondly known as Tok Nan, defended the seat under the Barisan Nasional banner for three consecutive terms.
He died in 2017 from heart complications.
Azizul will be going up against three others in the Dec 18 polls, namely Jery’in Fauzi of PSB, Goem Pijar (PBK) and independent Abdul Talip Ba’ew. - FMT
