KUALA LUMPUR: Politicians should stop focusing on their differences and instead come together on areas of commonality, says an MP.
Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming gave an example of how politicians, regardless of party, can help one another in their constituencies by finding new jobs and economic opportunities for the people.
“I think it will be a breath of fresh air for Malaysians, instead of arguing about things that may seem a little petty.
“Let’s work together on these issues rather than bringing up issues that divide us,” the DAP man said during a special dialogue entitled “What’s next for SMEs?”.
Earlier, Small and Medium Enterprises Association (Samenta) chairman William Ng had asked Ong, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil and Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki about their thoughts on how Budget 2022 could solve some of the pressing issues pertaining to SMEs.
Asyraf said stability ensured progress in the country. He agreed with Ong that politicians need a form of cooperation to embrace new values in politics.
“It’s not just the economic ecosystem. Reforms are also needed for the political institution with anti-hopping laws and a separation of powers in the attorney-general’s office, for the country to progress further,” he said.
He said reforms like these need to be put in place so that, regardless of the results of a general election, all would have to respect the decision of the people.
Fahmi, meanwhile, said the memorandum of understanding between the government and the opposition was an important stepping stone for the country.
“Political parties need to have an understanding for the country to have stability,” he said. - FMT
